Sharon ~ You make 2 of the coaster, and the CD is sandwiched between them, then you crochet all the way around both layers together to keep the CD in place.

Don't be. When I read the pattern the first time, I was wondering the same thing.

 

Also, is the CD really necessary? Would it work just as well without the CD?

 

The potholder idea sounds great too. Good idea there.

I glanced at the pattern and didn't even realize it had a CD listed. I just looked at the picture and figured it was one thickness! That's all I plan on doing it in, if I get a chance to do it before Halloween comes and goes!!

I had no clue there was a CD in it either, until I read this thread.

I don't worry if a coaster pattern calls for an old CD to be put inside it. I don't have any old ones. I just make and use the coasters without the CD's like we always have done.

 

And yes, some coaster patterns do make nice potholders if you enlarge them a little. That's when I make them double layered. Or make it double layered for a hot pad for the table.
