I don't understand what 'felting' is

Would someone mind explaining or pointing out a website that describes felting and fulling? I don't understand what it is or how it's done.

Basically it involves using wool, stitching open/loosely, then shrinking the fibers through the wash to make nice tight fabric. Looks & feels rather like felt when it's done. Used often for purses or other things you don't want to have gaps in it. Sometimes mixing other yarns in that don't shrink yields some interesting results... And of course you lose stitch detail in this process, so it's just worked in basic stitches like SC when you make it.

Thank you for being braver than I am. I've crocheted since I was about 7 and I sure didn't know what felting was. Now I'm really getting curious since I have some wool that I don't quite know what to do with.
