Make your own hook?

Anyone ever try to make their own crochet hook? I don't know why, but I've always wanted to try it. I've never done any woodworking, but I purchased a how-to book on making crochet hooks, and perhaps someday I'll give it a try.

My husband's family owns a woodshop, so he was just told that a set of these are on my Christmas wish list!;p

If you are going to make your own crochet hook you owe it to yourself to check out Jimbo's blog from August 2006 where he gives a complete multi-post tutorial on making your own hook. He's also been published in a woodworking magazine showing this technique!

I learned how to crochet on a hook made from a bent hair pin... my mother always used the large hair pins....I just straightened it out and bent one end to for the hook...I was 12 yrs old...what did I know, but it work pretty good and I taught myself how to crochet with it...

Seems a long time ago that I did that tutorial, and how appropriate that it be looked at again today on International Crochet Day!
