Double Ended Hooks-What is the Purpose?

e-patterns.com has a cute pattern today that calls for a double-ended M hook. What is the purpose of this type of hook?

I may be wrong but I believe it is used to get a reversable afghan.

They are used for crochet on the double/crochenit. You get a reversible finished product and it looks almost like it was knitted.

Is that allowed? I tried to go back to the site, but it's not letting me in. I deleted it because I didn't have or know where to get a double-ended hook.
