Hi all, I've been really happy with my wheel but now I'm kinda wanting to master the spindle for portability of my craft. Who has the best drop spindles that you know of? :think

I have electric spinning machine and I am happy too. For super-extra-bulky yarn I did a drop spindle with 7 CD-disks and thick stick. What can I say - work with it is very hard and boring and is not for business purpose.

I have only seen drop spindles at Museum Shops at places like Sully Plantation, The Museum of Frontier Culture, and other Farm Living Museums.

I have seen reference to a Soapstone weight used in Scandinavian drop spindles, but those were articles about Iceland and the age of Vikings.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I got mine on eBay from Annie May's Spin and Wool http://stores.ebay.com/annie-mays-spin-and-wool_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm

She was very helpful because I had no idea which spindle was best for a beginner. Of course, I found out I'm not very coordinated and probably need to sit down with someone to learn to USE it, but hey...it's pretty.

  • 5 months later...

I went to this guild: http://www.peachtreehandspinnersguild.org/ and asked some members what spindles they liked and didn't like and why.... Turns out the favorite spindles were ones made by a member of the group. They also cost less than the ones I saw on the web. Is there a spinning guild near you, or a folk art museum or school? I realized the "try before you buy" axiom was true for me. There are a lot of spindle forms and weights.

I have trouble when the wool is too heavy or too light for my spindle. The ace spinners I've met have spindles for every imaginable weight of fiber.

I'm still new to the world of spinning, so I can't offer any technical help. I wish you all the best!
