Does Old Yarn Tend to Split?

hookdonU

Question

I have some Caron Wintuk yarn that has been in my cedar chest a few years and it is splitting like crazy while I am stitching my prayer shawl. I'm not sure if it is the hook (Boye sz. N) or the yarn or both. Any suggestions?

I'd say the yarn though age might not be the reason. I bought some yarn the other week that is splitting like crazy.....I think it's just how the yarn is made or what it's made of.Good luck

Thanks for the replies. Thankfully, I only have one more skein of the stuff once the shawl is finished and I may use it to teach a friend's son to crochet - that way it won't go to waste. I have begun a crochet journal to keep track of yarns I really liked as well as yarns, hooks, etc that didn't work so well
