Measuring for a poncho

I am making Salt River poncho for my daughter. The pattern is for an adult. But it looks easy to change it to a small size cause it is worked in 2 panels. My question is how should I measure for the length of the panels so that they are long enough to wrap from the front to the back? Should I measure from mid front to the middle of her back going over her shoulder? or around her side? I welcome your advice!

measure from the top of her shoulder to her elbow for the width, and than the back of the neck to her waist..

but wouldn't that be more for a poncho made in the round? ?

no.. You defintly want to measure from her uppershoulder to her elbow that is for her width..
