this is the pattern: www.crochetme.com/issue_1...shoes.html

i've had alot of troubles with it....i dont think i want to do a second one to make the pair. i'd rather use a pattern that i dont have to change so much because now they will look different! step 8, the way they say it, would just make a long tube but people's feet get wider as they go out so i had to increase it many times. and then when i was doing the decrease for the toe, it was difficult to make it so i wouldnt have this weird point sticking out above my pinkie because i had to make it the same as the other side, my big toe, which is naturally longer. so there is this big space. now i'm on the heel and trying my hardest to do it the way she says but i'm finding that by doing it that way, 2 decreases per row, will take a long time to get to the middle and therefore be a really big heel. and plus, in the middle of the directions she states "36 sts each round for the size I'm making here." well that helps and all--if you told us what the size is that you are making. and doesnt the first step sound peculiar to you also- 'make two'. well, duh.

I'm using that pattern, too--I have one sock finished. I was even able to try it on as I went along, just had to be careful not to stretch out the cuff.

I don't know if I can help with all your questions since I'm new at this, too :) but a couple of things that might help... I didn't do any increases to accomodate the wider part of my foot. It just stretched enough. I might have to make an increase or two on the other sock, though, since I have an issue with that foot and it's a little wider than the left one.

The cuff--I made the cuff a little bigger than I'd have liked in retrospect, too. I'm thinking that JoAnn's sells elastic thread? I've been thinking of going and looking for some, and running it through at the top to tighten it up a bit since it's not huge, just a tiny bit looser than I'd like. I don't know how well that'll work out, but I figure it's worth a shot.

When I did the toe decreases, after several rounds I started making more decreases on one side than the other to sorta shift the opening over toward my big toe. (So I'll have a left sock and a right sock :lol but they won't be too big what with my big toe being longer!) Also, in the heel, I was having trouble with it turning into a long skinny tube, so I started making more decreases than the pattern said. I can't remember how many more I did, just messed around with it until it worked.

Oh, and I'm using Lion Brand Magic Stripes and a G hook, and I had a *lot* more stitches around than she did (maybe 50) even though my feet are pretty average (don't know measurements, but I wear an 8.5 in US shoe sizes). But I tend to crochet pretty tight, so that might be why--I had a little trouble getting the gauge right, but the G was closer than an H.

Hope that helps some!

yeah it does help! lets me know, i'm not dumb cause i'm not the only one with the probs on these socks!!! i guess i'll just have to go back to messing around with it to see what works. your cuff idea is really good, i think i'm gonna try that. i'm using a sport weight yarn, but it fits the hook she calls for so i dont htink thats part of the prob.

Chelsea, I haven't used that sock pattern. Stacey's advice sounds good to me! Also, on the cuff, you asked how to fix it. Not sure if you wanted to know if you could fix it without ripping your work back out, but I don't see any way other than ripping. Either do fewer rows or try some elastic like Stacey mentioned. I have not tried elastic myself.

anyone using the grafton fibers pattern? it's a bit vague. it says to chain one to two inches to start depending on on your foot size... but that is the only thing it says.grrr...i mean is this a width thing? i'm such a dufus with patterns as it is...

anyone have any words of wisdom???? am i just going to have to do trial and error???:? :? :? i'm:chicken

I didn't even think about it until now, but do baby socks count too? I made two pairs this past week, the green ones using this pattern and the yellow ones using this pattern

Those baby socks are adorable :)h

I finally started on the second sock of my pair--got the cuff done over the weekend.

I got Crocheted Socks out of the library recently, and of course I want to try *all* of those patterns (well, half of them, anyway). I bought some sock yarn over the weekend, too, so I have yarn for my next pair, and with any luck I'll be able to keep the book from the library long enough to make the oxford socks pattern (except I plan to make it all with my multicolored sock yarn, since that's what I bought, instead of with different colored toes & heels like in the photo) before I have to send it back. Or at least long enough to make one sock & take a few notes so I'll be able to make the second sock without huge problems...

 • 2 weeks later...

I've been wanting to try my hand at crocheting some socks - blame my aunt, she got me hooked to the idea because she's always knitting them... lol. And after reading all of these posts (yes, all of them) I'm so giddy I'll probably never get to sleep tonight! So I'll have to try my hand at this... it isn't sacreligious to make socks to wear with my cowboy boots is it? hehe

Tomorrow's my day off... wonder if I can use this as an excuse to buy more yarn? :danc

btw, some of your socks are awesome looking!

Anne

edited to add - I have a pattern for monster socks that I'm making for my brother's baby... I'll definitely have to share when I finish those!

Finally! Sometimes I hate the internet...

Here is my first monster sock! Unfortunately I didn't have a foot model available...

I am definitely understanding the problem with getting the second sock done now... why on earth do people have to have two feet? So much easier to just make one sock...

I had to seriously butcher the pattern... seeing as how it was for 2-4 year old size and I needed infant ones, I actually ended up scrapping the sock pattern and finding a plain old sock pattern online. I had to frog it twice too... realized I had forgotten to increase, then when I did I got a sock that would fit me! And then I had to make up my own toes, because the ones in the pattern were enormous on that sock! lol All in all, I'd say it turned out pretty good!
