Help with Graphing

Question

Hi everyone...so i have NO clue as to how I would go about graphing an afghan. I'm not the most experienced crocheter, so I don't know if I'm even up to the challenge! Here is the project I have in mind....my boyfriends dads birthday is today, and for MONTHS he's been saying that he wants a Griz afghan (http://umt.edu I think he wants a Griz Bear or a Bear Paw....if you check out that site it kind of gives you an idea of how it would be done. I told him I would have to graph it and he even looked up graphed bear crochet in many different forms! I'm thinking that I'll add a pad of graph paper to his birthday present, but since I have no clue I don't want to get too hasty until someone can help me! Does anyone know of any projects similar to this or can someone guide me though this with baby steps? I would really appreciate the help and I know his dad would LOVE this afghan!

get some tracing paper honey, trace your picture transfer it onto the graph paper and go around the outline squaring it off so the lines do not cut across the squares. One option which works well for me is to get a simple cross stitch chart and enlarge it, you can get a cross stitch chart for almost anything. Ps if you use any stitch other than sc the gahn will come out differeent than the graph, i know i used hdc on a sweater and got a long thin version of what i had graphe lol.

Thank you so much everyone! I think I'm going to try all of these Ideas (although maybe not on the same project!) then I can find out which I like the best and I'll know which to use on future projects! I'll be sure to use a sc, and no hdc..thanks for that tip! I wouldn't have known that at all! Thanks again for all the help you all gave me!:hug ~Christina

Okay, so once I have the pattern, since it's on a grid, how do I figure out how many stitches to do in each color per inch across? I have 3 pictures I'm going to run by him for patterns! Probably tonight! I probly won't get it done anytime soon though! I promise to post pictures when I do though!

If you used microrevolt...the "w" is the # of stitches I use and the "h" is the # of rows I use

Grid size:

Regular (48w x 64h) ...48 stitches x 64 rows

Big (96w x 120h)...96 stitches x 120 rows

XL (120w x 160h)...120 stitches x 160 rows !

If you are trying to copy a picture I suggest a program try: http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/ no downloading necessary.

If it's something simple try using excel, I did my last graph-ghan on excel and it came out great, it's simple. This is what the finished product looked like

Hope this helps

If it's any help, I have a tutorial at my site for how I make graphs using PC Stitch starting on this page:

http://www.angelfire.com/mi4/cinnaminn_s/makegraph1.html

FYI - You can make graph afghans using sc or the afghan (tunisian) crochet stitch - anything else may distort the picture since sc and afghan crochet stitch are similar/square shaped.

I have lots of helps/hints/tips at my site for crocheting if you want to take a look there. I also have a lot of almost free graphs at my site that I've made - the only thing I ask in return for use of my graphs are photo(s) of the completed item(s) that are made from my graphs.

HTH!

- Cheryl
