Where to buy yarn?

Where have you found the best place to purchase yarn?

I'm looking for a store that has the largest variety of yarn, whether it be Michaels, Walmart, or Joann's... I just don't know!

And I really don't want to venture to all three today...

What do you all think?

the best place around here for a wide variety and a reasonable price is AC Moore. it's much better than walmart, michael's or joann's. my second choice would be joann's.

but then, that's up here in new england.

Hi Jayme,

I think it depends on where you live. I've been to a number of Michaels and AC Moores (I avoid Walmart) all over the place, and each one has a different type of selection. If you're near a LYS, that would be your best bet. Also, if you're not in a rush, there's a ton of online yarn shops. My favourites are www.herrschners.com/default.aspx, www.elann.com/, and www.beehivewool.com.

Happy hunting!

My best place for yarn is online. The closest yarn stores I have are Walmart and my LYS (local yarn shop). As much as I like the yarn at my LYS, I just can't afford to shop there all the time. Well, I don't know, maybe I could afford it, but it's just not in the budget, if you know what I mean.

Although Walmart doesn't have a lot, things are looking up. Mine now has Bernat Galaxy, Eye Lash, Frenzy, Boa, and Softee Chunky. If Walmart has what I want, I buy it there, because the exact same thing will be more expensive elsewhere.

I've heard AC Moore is great. I haven't been to the one nearest me because it's about two hours away.

Online I've shopped at BeehiveWool, Jimmy Beans Wool, Herrschners, Mary Maxim, and Hancock Fabrics.

You just have to try out different yarns you find at different stores and see what you like best for yourself.

:jump Yep, I agree...you'll have to kind of hunt around and see what's best in your area, or online. Walmart is cheaper when it comes to yarn price, but they dont always have the best selection (homespun yarn at michaels for example, was $5, found it at walmart for $4.50). I have not yet been to the yarn store in my area...simply because the LYS's are always more expensive than craft stores or walmart. But I will get there at some point :)

 • 4 weeks later...

i have found

http://www.furryarns.com

they have great QUALITY stuff and will custome dye for you if need. i am having them dye some baby loop mohair to match the color of my sister's wedding. i plan to make her a lacy dainty openwork shawl to wear during the ceremony. it is going to be a surprise == her gown is sleeveless. anyway... i am also searching for the perfect pattern to use on this shawl any suggestions? i am thinking more of a rectangle type, than a triangle :scratchchin

other details, her gown is white with a light pink satin ribbon lacing up the back of the bodice. the flowers will be light pink roses and a very pale butter yellow.

furryarns is dyeing this yarn the very lightest hint of pink... think that will be pretty?
