Headbands??!!!

kariholtz

Question

My BFF (best friend forever) has requested a headband, she wants one that is about 4 inches wide on the top then skinny underneath so that it wont bunch her hair. She also wants it to be elastic instead of tie... anyone know of any patterns or of any tips on working crochet with elastic? This will be my first time working with anything other type of elastic besides ponytail bands.

I would use a large pony tail rubber band as the connecting point (where it would go under your hair in the back. Connect the yarn to it and sc about five stitches. Ch 1 and turn continuing this row pattern for a few rows. Then begin to increase one stitch on each side until it's as wide as you'd like it to be. Continue until it's time to start decreasing one stitch on each side and when it's identical to the first end, attach to rubber band.

It'll take a bit of measuring and frogging until you get it just right, but it should work just fine. :bigsmile

I was looking at crocheted hairbands at Target the other day and it looks like you could use some elastic to attach the headband to. I haven't checked at a craft store, but I would think that they sell elastic in 1" in black. You can crochet the piece and then sew it to a piece of elastic in the length that you want.

Do you think it would work better if you crocheted onto the elastic? Like you would if you were working on a towel or blanket? I guess it would be like working on a sock, which I've done. I would use a smaller steel hook because I think it would go through the elastic easier and let you get more stitches on it.

I have made headbands using cotton yarn and a teeny tiny hook for granny squares and also hemp twine using dc..I attached the elastic by folding the 2 long sides over and sticthing it with thread. worked great for me!

If you do a double crochet row, single crochet next row, then single crochet in the back loop only on previous row, then do a double crochet row and fasten off. Then you can fold it between the 2 single crochet rows (single crocheting in the back loop makes it fold over easier) and place your elastic inside that, then stitch the ends to close. That way you dont have white elastic showing when attaching it to your headband.

Just a thought.
