About Unusual Natural Yarns. . .

I don't spin but would be interested in purchasing some unusual natural fibers, since some in my family are very allergic. I used to use angora wool and wool, cannot do that anymroe. I've thought about alpaca yarn but I am not sure. Has anyone heard about allergic reactions to it? I've heard about people who spin dog and cat fleece. My sister is allergic to our cat, Lilly but not to our dogs Daisy and Cody, so, where do you get dog fleece that is spun into yarn?

Would it fall apart when crocheting it?

my mom is highly allerigic to wool (lanolin in the wool) and alpaca is fine for her, hope that helps..Alpaca is a mammal, so the hair or fleece or what ever is closer to human than wool

Um, fwiw, sheep are also mammals...

 

If the doghair is long enough then it is possible to spin it. Here's a thread where folks talk about spinning and doghair. However depending on where you live there may be ordinances against that.

Have you tried Alpaca? I sometimes have problems with wool, but I seem to be okay with the alpaca.

Dog or cat hair is very hard to spin by itself, from what I hear. I've heard alpaca is good for people with allergies.

I saw some beautifully spun tri-color Sheltie yarn last night at our fiber guild. I couldn't believe how soft it was! I expected it to be pretty course.
