How about getting the couple get involved in the process? Let them pick out a pattern and yarn colors. That way you'll know they'll love it. I'm sure it'll be something they treasure.

I have done a lot of afghans for gifts, mostly for nieces and nephews. I usually include something else too.

I have usually done them in off white but also plain colors, sometimes mixed colors.

I am working on a fan afghan right now.

I have done a diamond shaped one like rose reds,etc. Can't remember all of them.

Usually I pick out a unique pattern to do.

As for old ladyish, hmm I think it is a nice gift. I usually receive a lot of compliments.

  I know this post is kind a old but I figure it doesn't hurt to comment though. I have the same issue for the most part. My husband & I have been to a wedding & we also have 2 to attend this year & 1 to attend next year. I am going to be making a afghan from a pattern titled Tree of Love afghan. It is a really beautiful pattern/afghan. So, you might be able to make them something like this?
