Foundation chains

I've been making foundation chains often using the post which connects two stitches. Is there a better way to do this?

I usually use the top loop of the foundation chain to make the first row unless the pattern states otherwise.

If you make a chain and then turn it over you can see a little bump. Crochet into this bump and you get a nice firm chain with no stretching and no ambiguity about what constitutes one stitch. I like it because it makes a nice little edge.

Hooklady, I commonly use the foundation chain method, but if I miscalculate I use the method you mentioned (from the serendipity link) to add stitches. It's actually easier than the instructions make it look.
