Interesting question.  The Spruce craft link above doesn't give wire measurements, but this does

size 9  = 0.1144"  (2.906mm)  

size  18 = 0.0403"  (1.024mm) so, you would need to triple the size 18 wire to get you a tad over size 9

You're welcome!  One would think your logical assumption would prevail, but some measurement stuff comes down from ye olde ideas, like 3 barleycorns=1 inch, so (who knows) maybe the wire gauge evolved from wire used to make nails for horseshoes is size A, nails for people shoes is size B, a knitting needle wire is size C, and so on, in not necessarily a logical measurement progression.

The second link gave 9 and 18 gauge in mm.  Yes, triple would be correct.  Puppy wasn't behaving and I was heading out the door.  Glad Granny Square gave you more precise data that helped you.
