Some balls/skeins/whatever of yarn are loosely put together and the center hole is a mess.  I am wondering how this device would work in such a situation.  Sometimes you get two ends on the outside, etc.  Any thoughts.

I’ve created a center hole on some of my messed up skeins. Just needed to occasionally deal with knots in the yarn and go slower.   Max weight 200 gms . It’s great when the center becomes a knotted mess.  Snip, use outer yarn on this, keep going.

Thanks for all that info.  That is a pretty yarn; is it a roving yarn?  What is the fiber content?  Might there be some silk in there.

Lion Brand Landscape.  Color Mountain Range.  100% acrylic.  Loose ply.  Looks a little like roving.
