What type of stitch should I use with this yarn to make a blanket?

Kayla Jackson

Question

I have some yarn I want to use for a blanket but don’t know what stitch to use. It’s very variegated, more so than most yarns, so I think whatever stitch I use might get lost in all the colors, and that’s why I can’t decide. I’d like something other than just one of the basic stitches (single, double, etc) but it doesn’t have to be fancy.

Here’s the yarn: https://www.hobbylobby.com/Yarn-Needle-Art/Yarn-Tools/Yarn/Orange-Zest-Print-I-Love-This-Yarn/p/80880671

The plainest stitch possible; any lovely lacy stitch pattern is just going to be a dissonant mess with variegated yarn.

Oh wait, hold the presses, I said that before looking at the photo of the yarn.  I'd not call that variegated (where the yarn is color A for a few inches, color B for a few inches, etc.). I'd call this marled, which is the term for 2 or more colors plied together into 1 is called.

Probably your best bet to see what is going to please YOUR eye is to do some swatching.  Maybe, get a ball of a solid color that either matches or goes with your ball of yarn, and do stripes of 1 color in 1 stitch, and alternating rows the another yarn in another stitch.  Or keep it dissonant and keep the stitches more interesting with a griddle stitch, or woven stitch  for example to keep you from getting bored.

Ooh, I hadn't seen this tutorial before, the woven stitch looks cool in 2 colors https://crochetml.com/blogs/blog/photo-tutorial-how-to-crochet-the-woven-stitch

I was thinking along the same line as Granny Square.  A nice chevron pattern with an alternating solid colour.  Another idea is an arcade stitch.  I attached a link with a multi colour yarn that they used.  No pattern on that link though.  If you like the arcade stitch, it is easy enough to find a pattern.

I like the idea of the Arcade stitch. I also thought of double crochet between the stitches (I really like that one because it’s simple but looks like it isn’t, and turns out alternating) , or herringbone stitch. I did try moss stitch but just didn’t like it.

That looks great! I think what makes this pattern work is the super short color change span of this particular yarn, so each cluster is a different color for the most part, it's more "organized" in appearance than most variegated yarn.  (you can see the longer runs in the shorter stitches between the shells).

And the shell stitch is simple in appearance, so that helps.
