You are starting at the pointy tip of the purple part of the flap in the photo, and making an upside-down pyramid shape in rows.  The rows get wider and wider until you hit the width of the item (eyeglass case maybe?).  I'm guessing you'll keep going across that width, completing the flap and up and over the top and down until you reach the bottom back edge, then break the yarn. (I'm saying up and over and down, but it's all 1 rectangle beyond the triangular flat, that ends up getting folded over at the top).  The front looks like a separate rectangle since it is stitched at the bottom as well as up the sides.

The green circle happens when you do the edging, probably at the very beginning of the edging.

Row 1: Chain 2, 3sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn - 3 sc.

You are working in rows.  If you are right handed you will work across a row from your right to your left.  When you reach the end of your row you turn your project so you will once again be working from your right to your left on the next row.

---3 sc is your stitch count meaning you worked 3 sc in this row
