^ What she said.  Working into the sides of stitches is a little tricky/messy compared to working into the top of a stitch, because what is facing you is an untidy pattern of loops.  What I try to do is pick a spot for SC or spots for DC to stitch into for each row, and be consistent to keep the stitches evenly spaced.  There are a few Youtube videos on this if you search 'working into the sides of rows in crochet' which might help.
