Pattern help

I am working with a magic circle.  The pattern says to make 8 hdc in the circle and chain 2 (chain 2 does not count as a stitch here and throughout pattern). The next row is 2 hdc in each stitch (16 total).  My problem is, the chain 2 makes a gaping hole and I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I can copy and paste the instructions for the first two rounds if that is permitted and will help answer my question. I have started this project over so many times and I refuse to give up!

Tighten up your stitch so the chain 2 is invisible.  Planet June has excellent tips and tutorials.

Alternately, try chaining 1 and see if that isn't 'too tight' since it doesn't count as a stitch.
