What does it mean by sc in space below each sc around?  Is this around the post? I'm a little confused.

Is the pattern a free one on the 'net somewhere, or a photo of it? (sometimes it helps to see what effect is supposed to be achieved)

It doesn't sound like you are to work around a post, because it says 'in space below each sc'.  If there are post stitches, working around a post leaves the top of the stitch  worked around 'free', but that  would be a stitch not a space.

It might mean between the posts.  If it was around the posts it would need to tell you if it was a front or back post sc.
