Another way to visualize this - if you dc2tog, it takes 2 separate stitches and combines them into 1 - it uses up 2 stitches from the row below, and creates only 1.  That's  why you need 10 stitches from the row below, to create 5 dc2tog.  This will decrease the stitch count of your row by 5.
