hi there, i have a pattern and it says “ch. 3. then 5 dc2tog in the next ten stitches. i’m having trouble understanding 

please help

dc2tog is double crochet 2 together as shown in link below and you do it 5 times using 10 stitches of the previous row.  You are decreasing from 10 stitches to 5 stitches

Another way to visualize this - if you dc2tog, it takes 2 separate stitches and combines them into 1 - it uses up 2 stitches from the row below, and creates only 1.  That's  why you need 10 stitches from the row below, to create 5 dc2tog.  This will decrease the stitch count of your row by 5.
