Pattern help

Hello,

I've been teaching myself to crochet using YouTube videos.  So far I've got the basic stitches down alright but reading a pattern is another challenge.

I've done the chain to start, worked Row 1 but at the end of the Row 1 instructions it says 156 dc and 23 ch-1 sps

That is where I got lost!  Advice?

Hello Shepherds wife, that's how I learnt years ago.

It is telling you how many double crochet and how many chain 1 spaces you should have done.

Could you share a bit more of the pattern though. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something.
