Newbie needs help. Plz.

Jennylyn

Question

Hello I don't know how to crochet but I'd like to change that. I've messed around with crocheting when I was little but nothing serious or anything. I need some help as I want to make a gift for my boyfriend. I've tried looking to buy online but there is no official merchandise for this character so I'd like to try to make it. Hopefully someone here can help me out 😊 thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi, welcome to the Ville.  First you have to learn the basic stitches.  There are good videos by Kim Guzman  , here is her site http://crochetkim.com/freepatterns/   You can go to her videos from there.  Look for the CGOA beginner videos.

If you can't find a pattern for it, you will have to make it freehand and make up all the shapes yourself, then attach them together without the seams being noticeable.  Some people enjoy experimenting like that and some people don't.

I agree, the body, (wings? arms?) and ears don't look too difficult, the hair is probably just a pom-pom using un-plied yarn to get the curly look.  The feet are the only tricky-ish looking part.  Having said that, they don't look difficult for someone who has some crochet toy-making experience.  The stitches aren't hard (it's pretty much all 1 stitch), but knowing how to put them to get a shape is something that takes some experience.  Don't expect to sit down, learn how to make a couple of stitches and make this in a week--designing takes a lot of ... a different skill, and a lot of trial and error.  I've been crocheting for over 40 years and I'm terrible at designing from scratch...but I can usually take a pattern that's close to what I want and tweak it.

Here's a pattern that might work for the body, and the cat's ears could have a row or 2 added for the arms https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/egg-shaped-cat

You could borrow the feet from this pattern - they aren't as dimensional like the original, but they'd be easier https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bird-of-a-color  Or, here's a bird with similar dimensional feet https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/p-chan-custom---the-bird-in-celestial-warriors-sun-red

For the ears...rather than trying to find a pattern, I'll give you a "recipe'.  It's made sort of like a really looong hat.  Start at the tip of the ear, the same as the birds's body borrowed from the cat pattern.  Stop increasing when the circle that you've made is as wide as you want the ear to be, and then work around without increasing until you get to the length you need.  Make notes of where you stopped at the beginning, and count the rounds so you can create an identical ear.

There are lots of tutorials on how to make the pom-pom.  The hardest/annoyingest part of this is unplying the yarn; cut the length of yarn it calls for, then pull the plies apart and wrap around the form.  Look for an instruction that calls for making a cardboard form, no need to buy one.  Alternative would be to make one with intact yarn and try to brush or comb it, but I'd be afraid I'd pull the threads out and have it fall apart.
