Idea for a good first project

tinkerpuppet

Question

So I have been doing a ton of practice swatches and feel pretty comfortable with sc, hdc and dc. But now I don't know what to make. What's a good first project to start out with? I don't feel comfortable really following a pattern yet, I'd just like to freehand something. I was thinking maybe a scarf (fitting considering the time of year!). Are those pretty easy? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

My first project was a huge granny square afghan made out of one huge granny square. It helped me get up my speed and used to DC's... I highly recommend doing this as a first project...

scarves are easy to make just chain the width you want your scarf and work in rows till you get the length you want. i started with granny squares and made a big blanket doing the square in one so as not to have to sew together lots of little squares. :hook bookmarks are also easy to make. i have learnt to read patterns but i have also made up some of my own patterns too :)
