No idea what stitch this is

I saw a hat at hockey game. It looked as though it was crocheted. I asked the person wearing it if it was knitted or crocheted. She bought it in a store somewhere on vacation. It wasn't hand made.

The pattern looked like a diamond stick but the centre of the raised part was like a star stitch but oval or almond shaped. I would have taken a picture but I didn't have my phone on me.

I came home drew it out. The grey is the raised up part like in the diamond stitch and the coloured parts are like the star stitch. Has anyone seen a pattern like this or could give me some direction, that would be helpful.

if it wasn't made by hand, it wasn't crocheted.  it could have been machine knit, and that kind of knitting can be made to look a lot like crochet.  

 

Bavarian crochet is a stitch pattern that looks a lot like your sketch, though the color combinations would not look like that.  here is a blog post on Bavarian and you can link to a couple of hat patterns form there. http://thecreativehook.com/creations/bavarian-crochet/

 the same stitch pattern may also be called Catherine wheel, or wool eater.  if you google around you can see examples of each of these.

 

well i just realized, since the inside of the diamonds are each a different color, maybe they are separately made motifs, and then joined together with the gray or black color.  that would work and could be crocheted pretty easily .  I don't know of a pattern like that though.
