Curvy Shawl

ReniC

Question

This shawl is pretty and I'm thinking of making it for someone special, but, I'm not fond of the way it curves at the top instead of being straight across. If I'm not mistaken, it's a "bottom to top" pattern

What causes this to happen? Not enough stitches at the top, wrong hook size or yarn weight? I'm curious about this since I've seen it with other patterns. Or do you think this is just the design in itself?

It is the way it is designed. You can see the pronounced curve in the stitch diagram http://www.elkstudiohandcraftedcrochetdesigns.com/2016/05/19/southern-diamonds-shawl-symbol-diagram/

I think it is partly just for the look of it, but also will probably stay on the shoulders better than a straight line.

Thank your for the response Kathy.

I just received a response from the pattern author explaining this one was intentional for the "angel wings" look to help keep the shawl on the shoulders.

That old saying: "Great minds think alike!"

If you were wanting any suggestions for triangle shawls with a flat top line, here are a couple I had in my favorites

I have not made any of those.

I have made these---

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/shawl-vigne   is gorgeous and you can get the book via your local library probably

The shawl patterns are beautiful. Thank you. I too have made the Elise shawl and it is still worn by my middle daughter.

you're welcome!  and thank you for the excuse to ramble through shawl patterns  ;)

I made Elise as a gift and am not really sure how much it has been used.  also made Vigne as a gift and I know she wore it at least once!

You could always gift the shawl recipients with a tag like I referenced in Crochet Help/Crochet Reference :lol

This shape is by far the easiest to wear because it wraps nicely around your shoulders.

If that edge is too straight you get a bump of fabric at the back of your neck and the edges do not hang nicely. (Speaking from experience.)

Remember, this pattern probably starts at the centre back of the neck and the bottom edge will be the bottom of the piece.

The scarf I make like this only curves this much if I double the number of stitches on the final row, before the finish

The one thing you don't want though is a tight bottom edge or you scarf will roll up from the bottom.

Have fun.

Colleen

PS, not sure how to post a picture or I would show you my scarf which is similar.

Hi AggieMay - to post a picture go to more reply options, then at the bottom left you will see a spot where you can insert a file from your computer (by the paper clip).  Choose the file you want, then click the 'attach this file' button.

Hi Aggie-May: Glad to see you're back. I've made several of your round ripples and still have the pattern you sent me. :yes

Thank you for all the useful info in todays post. Although, this pattern does start at the bottom. Since the shape is not what the recipient wants, I'm going to pass on it and use a different one her. This will be for Christmas so I have plenty of time (or so I think- LOL) to chose and make.

Great to hear the Round Ripple pattern is still being well used.

So many have said they still use it that I might have to start another myself.

I have to admit, I was a little confused after looking at the picture of the Curvy scarf. For some reason I had "knitted" stuck in my head and forgot I was answering a question on a "crochet" site.

My only defence is old age......

I have crocheted triangles starting at the back of the neck and increasing to the size required but I usually work it out when I get started so I am no help to you just now.

Have fun.

Colleen

PS, I bet it is lovely in Arizona just now. Not so here as we are having thunder, lightning, wind, rain etc, oh and a bit of sun every now and then. I suppose it is winter on this end of the world and we did have a very long hot summer so better not complain too loudly.

We always have very hot summers in my neck of the world. The temperatures right now are great here in nw-AZ's Spring time, 77F. We can even go outdoors now to enjoy some sunshine. Yay! We've had some horrendous winds the past 4 of 5 days- 60mph gusts and in the area I live in 20 miles outside of town, a huge new farm is going in the desert and the plowing has dug up way too much dust and causes awful dust storms. Hopefully it will stay settled down and we can enjoy what's left of a mild Spring. (It does give me more reason to crochet more though)    :)
