how do I create a computer-generated DIAGRAM for a crochet pattern?

Carolyn252

Question

I want to create a stitch diagram for a blanket that I'm crocheting. Is there an app available anywhere that I can use to create the diagram? I did draw the diagram with paper and pencil, but it would look so much better if it was drawn by computer. Please let me know. Thanks, Carolyn252@aol.com

welcome to the ville!

what kind of diagram do you want?  like this http://www.lionbrand.com/faq/346.html?utm_source=notebook&utm_medium=ATblog03112013&utm_campaign=cathead  for colorwork

or this http://www.craftyminx.com/2011/11/crochet-school-lesson-21-reading-crochet-charts.html   where the diagram shows the specific stitches to be made

Wow !  That second link is an awesome resource.  Amazingly clear information.  I've bookmarked it for future reference.  But it's not the specific thing that I'm looking for now.  I'd like a computer application that can draw the chart so that it comes out looking like this:

Carolyn, I've had to remove the image you included in your last post to comply with our forum policies. To prevent any copyright infringement issues, our policies state that members can only upload photos and images to which they own the copyright.

You're welcome to edit your post and include a link to a free pattern that has the type of chart that you're looking for.

Right, that link was meant to illustrate the kind of diagram.

I personally have never tried a program for symbol diagramming so i can't recommend anything. Couple of recent discussions on Ravelry that contain ideas/references...

Yes, of course, Amy.  I understand.  And, indeed, as "magiccrochetfan" a/k/a Kathy stated, the image I attached was meant only to illustrate the kind of diagram. But I don't own the image, so I understand why it had to be removed.

Kathy: I will definitely open the two links that you offered;   Thank you SO much for your reply.  You've suggested some new wording for me to try hunting with: "...a program for symbol diagramming."

Much obliged.

Well, after much hunting, I found this chart of crochet symbols.  Each symbol can be copied and pasted.  I tried copying and pasting into a blank page in Word, but I haven't yet figured out how to position them on the page in any sort of pattern.   Here's the link to the whole chart of all the crochet stitch symbols:

http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/adriprints/stitchin/crochet/

I copied the symbol for a double crochet, and pasted it on a blank Word page, then I copied the symbol for a chain stitch and pasted it twice onto that same page.  Clicking on the chain symbol allows you shrink or enlarge each symbol, and dragging the little green dot allows you to rotate the symbol.  That way I can make a granny square's corners with two chain stitches.  But I cannot figure out how to make the two chain symbols get close to each other.  When I move one of them closer to the other, it simply overlays it and covers it up.  Grrrrrr.  Enough struggling;  I'll do more tomorrow.  (Maybe.)

If you are just copying from the link above, it's a rectangular picture with a solid white background, and the solid white background is covering up part of other symbols when you rotate them or get them too close together.

You need to change the solid white background to become transparent.  I was going to copy some links for you, but there were a lot--and since they pertained to different versions of Word: try googling 'graphic with transparent background in MS Word' and find one that pertains to your version.  You can also change backgrounds to transparent in Paint, but I know Paint has changed its menus from one OS version to the next too, so...
