Your best bet is to buy it online. Laceweight yarn is seldom to be found in the usual craft shops, I've found. For a very affordable and nice laceweight, Knit Picks can't be beat, but it comes in hanks which means you will have to wind it into balls before you can work with it. They have several really nice ones, ranging from 2.99 on up, check them out.

 

Beyond that, there really is no good substitute for laceweight that I know of. It is a very thin yarn.
