trouble with granny squares

Recommended Posts

I am a beginner at crocheting, i picked up Tunisian stitch pretty quickly, A friend wanted to teach me so I said yes. I am having a terrible time teaching myself to make a granny square. I am learning from Youtube, there are some excellent videos on there.

I get frustrated easily, I don't know what to do? Aren't granny squares supposed to be easy? I planned on granny squares being my next project but maybe I'm not ready for them yet. What should I do for my next project? I can't do anything complicated, I'm still a beginner. I'm so mad at myself I could spit.

Granny squares aren't really difficult, but it is difficult to learn anything when you feel frustrated.  There are good videos on youtube, but there are some pretty bad ones too.

The simplest way to make a granny square is to change colors on each round.  here are a couple of tutorials on sites that I have found to be reliably helpfulhttp://crochet.about.com/od/learntocrochet/ss/Crochet_Granny_Square.htm

A reference book is a good investment too.  I'd recommend Complete Photo Guide to Crochet by M Hubert, it's very comprehensive and easy to understand.  http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Photo-Guide-Crochet-Comprehensive/dp/1589234723/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369273912&sr=8-1&keywords=complete+photo+guide+to+crochet

wow, granny was the first thing i taught myself, and I had trouble too, but now and for years, they are my fav thing to make!! I agree, tutorials are great, and seems you may be a visual learner, is there anyone you know, that could go through the steps with you, actually, it is easy, once you know how....I feel for you, I had a terrible time with them too, learning from books only, but mastered it, and there are many many variations. the traditional granny square is where I started. heres a good one by Theresa, she does them exactly the way I learned years ago.......

Just a word of encouragement here. Don't give up. Practice is the best remedy.

If it gets overwhelming at times, set the project aside for awhile, read, watch a little TV or even work on a little project like a washcloth or a coaster, then go back to the Grannies. It will all come together for you with perseverance and patience. The gals have given you some good references so you are in good hands.  :)

This blog has a nice tutorial for making granny squares, really good photos and she explains everything clearly.

I find some of the youtube videos go way too fast, sometimes pics are easier for me to follow, maybe this will help you too... good luck!!
