How to Crochet a Name on a Hat

Your best bet would be to embroider the name on, or do a surface slip stitch (which is more or less embroidering with crochet). Here's one site with instructions http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-surface-crochet-or-surface-slip-stitch/

Unless you are making the hat in doily thread, it is really hard to use a graphed alphabet and incorporate the name into the stitches 'as you go' and have a legible name on something as small as a hat (you would have to use sc, or tunisian). Google 'charted alphabet' and you will find several sites that have alpabets graphed out for cross stitch, crochet, etc. The smallest alphabet I've seen is 5 stitches high, and that isn't very legible in crochet.

It can be done although I agree, it's not super clear.

This one used to be on HGTV however they have removed the instructions but maybe the photos will help:

Here is another one that is a bit more clear. Maybe her notes will help you:

Maybe this name afghan will also help a little:

Good luck.

Thanks so much to everyone who tried to help me out with this. The only thing I can find online is one done in sc. I cannot believe that no one has any instructions on how to do this. I appreciate all of the info and the help guess I will just have to keep looking.

First, you need to have a hat, or at least the portion with the lettering, made in an even, small-as-possible, non-gappy stitch, either sc or tunisian.

Methods to get names on hats are limited, and we've already given you details or google hints on all but one, and I've added that at the end:

embroidery - google embroidery stitches, probably cross stitch or stem stitch would work best

surface sl st - instructions given above

sc - as I said in my first post, google 'charted alphabet', also Empress has given you some specific patterns with charted letters which should explain how to do the color changes to work the letters in as you crochet. For more help with changing colors, look here http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/join-new-yarn.htm this site is a treasure trove, lots of good stuff here

Tunisian - Most color change tunisian patterns just have you make a plain tunisian st background and cross stitch the colors on. I imagine tunisian patterns for hats are harder to find than sc, to start with. Here is a link to changing colors in tunisian, if you google 'change colors in tunisian crochet' you will find more:http://www.crochet.borgbilly.com/tutorial/afghan.htm Personally I think this is the last method I'd choose, it doesn't lend itself to lettering very well.
