Baby Ear Flap Hat

Soooo, this is the first ever pattern I've written up. I've tested it, but I haven't had anyone else test it, so if you try it and find any confusing bits, or other mistakes please PM me and I'll change them.

Oh, and if you make one can you post a pic??

 

Fits probably newborn to 6 months or so, at least, my daughter (in the pics) is 5 1/2 months.

Baby Ear-Flap Hat

 

 

Yarn: MC approx. 50g 8 ply or 2 strands 4ply baby yarn; small amount CC

 

Hook: 5mm

 

(At least, this is what I used and I have a fairly average kind of tension - I've got no idea how to determine guage)

 

Main Hat

Main hat is worked in a circle, at end of every round join with sl st

 

1) Using MC form a magic ring (see instructions here http://crochetme.com/Dec_Jan_0405/reads_round.html), ch 3 (counts as dc throughout), 14 dc in ring (15 dc), sl st in 3rd ch

2) Ch 3, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st in 3rd ch (30dc)

3) Ch 3, dc in same stitch, *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, 1 dc in final dc, sl st to join (45 dc)

4-9) Ch 3, dc in each dc around, join with sl st in 3rd ch (45 dc)

 

Form 1st Ear Flap

1) Ch 3, dc in next 10 dc, turn (11dc)

2) Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in next 6 dc, dc2tog, turn (9dc)

3) Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in next 4 dc, dc2tog, turn (7dc)

4) Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in next 2 dc, dc2tog, finish off (5dc)

 

Form 2nd Ear Flap

1) Join MC using sl st 12 stitches from last dc of 1st Ear Flap, Ch 3, dc in next 10dc.

2-4) Follow instructions for 1st Ear Flap

 

The ear flaps should be equal distance apart (12 stitches on one side, 11 on the other)

 

Edging and Ties

1) Using MC join in 1st dc after Ear Flap, ch 1 (does not count as stitch), sc in same stitch, sc in each dc around, working 2 sc each row on sides of ear flaps (65sc) Finish Off MC

2) Join using CC, sc in each sc around until cnr of 1st ear flap, 2sc in cnr of ear flap, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in cnr of ear flap, sc in each sc around to cnr of 2nd ear flap 2sc in cnr of ear flap, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in cnr of ear flap, sc in each sc to end, join with sl st. (69 sc)

3) Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around to stitch before 1st ear flap corner, *2sc, 1sc, 2sc over next 3 stitches*, sc in next 2 sc, do not fasten off

[Form Tie 1]

Ch 42, hdc in back loop of 3 ch from hook, hdc in back loop of each ch for 28 stitches, ch1 sk next ch, hdc in back loop of each ch to start

 

I'm not sure how to explain which part of the chain I mean so here's a pic

[Continue Edging]

Sc in next 1 sc, *2sc, 1sc, 2sc over next 3 stitches*, sc in each sc around to stitch before 2nd ear flap corner *2sc, 1sc, 2sc over next 3 stitches*, sc in next 2 sc, do not fasten off

[Form Tie 2]

Ch 42, hdc in back loop of each 3ch from hook, hdc in back loop of each ch to start

[Continue Edging]

Sc in next 1 sc, *2sc, 1sc, 2sc over next 3 stitches*, sc in each sc around to end, join with sl st, fasten off.

 

Finishing

Weave in ends.

Make a 3.5cm/ 1.5inch pompom. Attach pompom securely to top of hat.

Find cute baby, place hat on head
