us hook size/german size

I bought some patterns from somewhere in Germany and they have numbers for the hook sizes instead of letters, like 8, 12, 14, 1. It has me sort of confused. Can anybody help?

It says cotton yarn US 8, UK4 1/2for the 1st part 2nd part US 12 UK 6, 3rd part US1 UK 1, 4th part US14 UK 7. Make sense to you?

Maybe it is the numbers with the letters on the hooks? Like my H hook says H and 8 as well as a mm size.

this thread gives you more info about hook sizes. An UK 6 hook would be a 6 mm hook or a US J. (but this seems very big to me for cotton... I don't suppose the pattern tells you what type of cotton they use, does it? I might recognis the brand.) A 4.5mm hook is between an American G (4.25 mm) and a H (5 mm)

Hmm, I though a size 7 hook was like a G1/2 or between G and H size in US

Thanks everybody! Found a conversion chart. Feel sort of stupid I didn't think of this before.
