Filet Crochet Question

Question

I found a pattern (Greek Filet Runner) that I would like to try. It has a chart but it doesn't say how many I should chain to start. I've tried several times to figure it out but I can't get it right. Is there a formula or something I should use?

It will depend on the size block you are going to use. If you are using a block of 4 dc, post, 2 filler 1 post. you calculate it this way. number of blocks/or meshes x 3 + 5 should give you the number of chains needed if your 1st row ends with a mesh. If it ends in a block the formula is blocks/ or mesh x 3 + 3. . I like to use a extended double crochet for all my filet work. It makes the blocks squarer.

Best of luck on your project. Filet is wonderful.
