Crocheting with Fabric?

So I want to try to crochet with fabric (I have waaaay too many fabric scraps, but nothing to make out of them so this seemed like it would be a nice break from using yarn). I don't want to make rag-rugs; I was thinking instead of maybe a hat or a skirt.

 

But, how do you prepare the fabric to crochet it? Do you just cut strips and then knot them together? It seems like there should be a better, more permanent way.

You can tear them or cut them , and it might work better to sew the pieces together w a sewing machine.Here's a link w some instuctions

Cool! Thank you very much. I came across a site that had some awesome items that were crocheted with fabric, and (since my fabric stash is actually worse than my yarn stash) figured that would be good to try.
