Need help removing stain

I have a very old table runner (maybe around 75-100 years old) that has some really dark stains of unknown origins and no clue as to the best way to try to remove them. The runner is made with very fine thread almost as small as sewing thread, smaller than size 20 cotton. I am afraid to use bleach since this runner appears so delicate. The thread still seems pretty strong, there are no holes or loose ends. It is in really good condition other than the stains.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :hug.

Given its age, I think I'd contact a museum of textiles for assistance here. Some museums hold workshops; others are source of authoritative books.

Some textile museums have online hints for caring for older items. Maybe you could find one who would actually look at it for you.

There is an Englewood Textile Museum in Tennessee, but I couldn't find a website for it.

A very old method is to soak it in borax. This was always used on linens and baby clothes when they'd been packed away in an attic, and developed mold and mildew smells and stains.
