Love Knot Stitch

I've figured out how to do the Love Knot stitch, but how do I keep my work even when I am subjectively estimating the length of the loop each time? And, after I have made a base length of love knots, how do I turn and work the next row up? I'm sort of lost at that point. I am wanting to make a love knot poncho like 2 people have made recently.

someone has just done a shawl in the love knot stitch, over on the current projects topic..you might try asking them ! that stitch terrifies me
