Question For Those Who Design

How do you determine how much yarn a project needs when writing up one of your patterns?

 

If I am working with a 16 oz skein that was used already how do I figure out how much of it I used for a project?

I use a kitchen scale to weigh the yarn that I have used. I bought mine at walmart for about $10.00.

I also use a scale to weigh either the yarn or the complete project, or if I start with a new skein I just guesstimate on how much it takes.

Most of the time I estimate, but I have a triple balance beam scale which is actually a laboratory scale and is extremely accurate. It can weigh down to one tenth of a gram and not be off. This type of scale is very pricey though, so you don't want to spend the money on it unless you have another use for it also. I had an herbal business for years and bought it then, and I'm glad I kept it.
