PATTERN: Easy beginner's hat

After a lot of trial and error, I came up with a really simple hat pattern for beginners. It is knit flat rather than in the round. It is a piece of cake to follow. Feel free to email or PM me if you have problems as it hasn't been tested other than by me :) I've made 3 hats so far following this pattern... you can do it in a solid color or you can get brave and practice some color work :)

MATERIALS:

- Any worsted weight yarn

- One pair straight US 5 needles

- One pair straight US 8 needles

SIZE:

Toddler/Adult

Instructions written for Toddler size, instructions for Adult size in ()

ABBREVIATIONS

K: Knit

P: Purl

St st: Stockinette Stitch

K2tog: Knit two together

INSTRUCTIONS:

- With US 5 needles, cast on 78(85) sts

- Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 inch

Switch to US 8 needles

- Work in St st for 3.5(4) inches

Adult size only:

- On next RS row, [K10, K2tog] 7 times, K1 - 78 sts

- P 1 row

Both sizes:

- RS row, K1, [K9, K2tog] 7 times - 71 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, [K8, K2tog] 7 times - 64 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, [K7, K2tog] 7 times - 57 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, [K6, K2tog] 7 times - 50 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, [K5, K2tog] 7 times - 43 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, [K4, K2tog] 7 times - 36 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, [K3, K2tog] 7 times - 29 sts

- P 1 row

- RS row, K1, K2tog to end of row - 15 sts

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for seaming. Thread all stitches onto tail yarn and pull tightly to close. Sew seam using mattress stitch for an invisible seam and weave in end.

Ok, I hav a question...what do you mean by "work st st for 3.5 inches"? Do I knit each row or alternate knit/purl rows?

Yup, I should have been more clear. St st in Stockinette Stitch, where you alternate knit and purl rows :)

Thanks! I really need to learn the knitting terms, lol. I've only been knitting for a couple of weeks now, but the pattern is really working up easy for me! Thank you for posting this. I can't wait to see how my hat turns out. :D

Thanks for sharing the pattern. I have a question also. I really don't like seams in hats. Can I just knit the whole thing in the round? Would the only adjust be that I knit each row instead of alternating a knit row with a purl row?

Definitely! I just wrote it to be knitted flat since most beginners are terrified of knitting in the round... I know I was. Just make sure that when it says to purl one row that you are knitting one row instead :)
