Has anyone tried using any of the looms out there? I know there are round, oval, butterfly looms, etc.. Are they worth the money or is crocheting faster? Are the looms easy to use?

I was looking at a set of looms at Walmart this week but passed them by at $20.00. Thought I'd ask for your expert opinions first!

Are there many patterns available for them?

Thanks for all of your input!

I liked my knifty knitter looms at first, but got bored quickly with the lack of variety.

I do find them useful for teaching children a "craft" they can make for gifts. My neighbor girl made some hats for her family with them, and they came out great. She was able to learn it quicky when she was only about 6 or 7. They are also the best way that I know of to work with Homespun yarn.

I have found them to be quite addicting. I started with the round Knifty Knitters set. I made several hats with them. Then I bought the set of long looms when they came out with them. I have made scarves using the pink one. The pegs are largest and farthest apart on the round ones which makes it easier to learn on but you have to use a really thick yarn or else use two strands together. I have since purchased a couple of wooden knitting boards because I wanted a finer gauge. It is amazing to see everything they make on these. Here are a few of my favorite sites.

I got the Knifty Knitter looms about a year ago and loved them. I have every one they make and made lots of hats, scarves and other things in what seemed like no time. The gauge is large so you normally have to use a double strand of worsted weight yarn or bulky yarn.

But like the other poster, I grew a little bored and what to try other things which lead me to crochet. I can easily loom a hat or scarf faster on the loom than crochet, but that's probably because I'm still new to crochet. I still love the looms and will not be entirely giving them up.

Sometimes you can get the 50% off coupons from AC moore or Micheals and the the knifty knitter set would only be about 10.00. :)
