HELP with Yarn Substitution please!

CrochetBallet

Question

I want to make a cardigan for my niece and the yarn in the pattern is Moda Dea "Cherish" which is a Light weight "3" yarn. They say to use a G hook (or size to obtain gauge, of course). I want to make the cardigan using TLC "Amore", which is a Medium "4" yarn and don't know what size hook to use. I'm assuming that, since it is a fluffier, heavier yarn, I'll need to go DOWN a hook size...and I also realize that my gauge differential is relevant...but any ideas of a starting point?

THANKS! :hug

You may have to go down even 2 hook sizes and instead of going by stitches per inch really look at stitches per row too. Others may have ideas too!;)

I agree with shuttlebuggy--you may need to go down 2 hook sizes in order to get the gauge right. But word of caution--using a smaller hook with a thicker yarn will tend to make the fabric stiffer than the original pattern. You'll see what I mean when you make your gauge swatch.
