I am not great at suggesting changes for threads. ...never use the stuff myself :rofl This is a wonderful pattern though. would you make both parts?

Have you considered making a BICO instead. it is a great pattern, it is easy and it uses yarn you probably have.

The CAL is here:

http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36185

Just the pattern is here:

http://www.crochetme.com/Feb_Mar_2005/patt_baby_sweater.html

This thing is so easy and we all still read the BICO thread if you need help.

Check out the pictures of all the adorable ones that have been done.

All of this just says that I can't help you with this pattern. ... as neat as it is.

if you check the CAL there are instructions for lots of sizes and how to work to the size you need. I could help you to work out the numbers with her measurements and a gauge swatch
