Most MAM's are crocheted in strips that are worked in rounds. You do the center then work around it. After so many strips you sew them together. I've found that adding a border around the whole thing really makes it much sturdier.

Personally - I think they're a pain in the butt but they do come out pretty and some people just love them.

 

they're not 'fiddley' the patterns are really easy to follow and because you're doing it assembly line style - alll the centers, all the row 1's and so on - you know the stitch in your sleep by the time you get to the next one.

But you know if you want to be able to take it with you MAMs are great because they don't get overly bulky. And for me it seems like the MAMs aren't as boring as a reg afghan done in rows so I don't lose interest as quickly. I just don't like to do afghans but the MAMs are ok.
