Feet Need Socks Crochet-along

Donna

Recommended Posts

We went out to the craft store today - we got to San Diego yesterday, so new stores to dig through! - and it's a miracle that I made it out, let alone with only one bag! I finally have yarn for some socks - lime green, and then some blue/green oceany stuff. Off to find the pattern now and we'll see how they go!

Hmm, lime green socks and black cowboy boots... hehehe

I've had a pattern book of sock patterns for two years now and never made any of them. I've been looking through the messages for this CAL, and it's motivated me to get the book out and make some socks!

Add me to your CAL list please! ;o)

Hugs,

Juli

Woohoo! I got my first pair of socks finished!

I used lime Red Heart Micro Spun (?) and the toes up pattern... and I love em!<img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" />

Almost immediately after finishing them, I started on another pair, in a lot finer yarn - it says it's sport fine. I finished the first one and it's a little more waffly feeling than the other pair, but it's okay. I have pictures of the green ones and the first one in this yarn, but since I'm not at home I can't upload them. I promise pics as soon as I get home though!

Back to work on sock number 2... somehow, I don't have the problem with starting number 2 that I did with the monster socks - maybe because these are for me and I want to be able to wear them darnit!

So far no socks to go with my cowboy boots though... the lime ones are way too short to be able to wear with them I think. Guess we'll find out? <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cowgirl.gif" />

Juli, I'm going to pretend I didn't read anything about a sock yarn sale ! I have so much sock yarn as it is! :lol

I did finish another pair of socks a couple of weeks ago though. I call them my checkerboard socks.

These are in LB magic stripes in lumber jack black, worked toes up in hdc with a fpdc/bpdc ribbing at the top. I was surprised a little by this yarn because I tend to avoid LB these days but I like how this worked up! After washing in woolite, they are really soft, too.

Jess, those came out great! Love the colors--I haven't seen that one at any of the stores I've been to lately.

I finally finished mine (it's only been, what, three months?)

They're the In Your Shoes ankle socks pattern at Crochetme, with some changes for my pointy feet. :P The yarn is LB Magic Stripes in sea blue. I did end up getting a spool of elastic thread, and I may yet run some around the top, but I decided they were probably ok as is. I haven't decided yet if I feel drafty or not. And...I might redo the heel on the first sock, since I've got enough yarn left over and on the second sock I was able to make a much cushier heel by switching from sc to hdc after the first several rounds. But they're technically done, so I'm posting them!

Those are so cute, Stacey! :)h I bought my mom some of that colorway for holidays since she just got into sock knitting. I love how the stripes turned out on the ribbing at the top! :heart:heart Lovely socks!

[how did you like that pattern? Does the seam bother you or is it unnoticable? I haven't tried it for that simple reason.]

I think I want to try a gusseted heel on my next pair. I'm working on them already; Lana Grossa Meilenweit [sp? I can never remember] in this purple and grey and black colorway. I'm working them toes up in split sc for the foot part, and planning to rib the top in fpdc/bpdc.

:grrrr :grrrr

Donna, feel free to put them in the gallery--thanks!

[how did you like that pattern? Does the seam bother you or is it unnoticable? I haven't tried it for that simple reason.]

The only thing that really made me nuts about this pattern was trying to get the gauge right in the beginning--I couldn't quite get it with any hook size. I finally settle on a g since that was closest to the stitch gauge (and after reading the pattern a few times I realized the row gauge wasn't all that important, though I ended up having to do more increases some rounds in the heel because of that).

The seam hasn't bothered me at all. I think if it were at the back of my ankle it might, but even though the pattern says it'll be at the back, after slip stitching the cuff together & crocheting around the bottom of the cuff, I ended up with the seam at the side, and it didn't bother me when I wore them the other day...

Okay, I'm finally home, so here are my pictures!

First, the infamous lime green ones. I hadn't woven the ends yet, I'm so bad... (Lion Brand Microspun- lime green - toe up pattern)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93694763@N00/5966803/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos7.flickr.com/5966803_6e643c7a7d_m.jpg" width="240" height="177" alt="greensocks" /></a>

Next, my blue and green striped ones! I only have one finished so far... I'm having trouble getting going on the second one. (Lion Brand Microspun - lime green and turquoise - toe up pattern)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93694763@N00/5966809/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos6.flickr.com/5966809_2e4fa1edb7_m.jpg" width="240" height="177" alt="stripe2" /></a>

Last, my lightweight ones. These ones feel a little waffly underfoot, I think they'd be better layered over some lightweight socks. They're okay for sitting around though. (Red Heart Luster Sheen - Ocean - toe up pattern)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93694763@N00/5966806/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos6.flickr.com/5966806_262f2b55d5_m.jpg" width="240" height="177" alt="stripesocks" /></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/93694763@N00/5966805/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos7.flickr.com/5966805_5273f2b1ce_m.jpg" width="240" height="177" alt="stripey" /></a>

Now I have to find some dark red yarn to make some socks for my friend... not having too much luck with that. I wanted something along the lines of the micro spun, but that doesn't seem to exist in the right colors... <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/frown.gif" /> Oh well...

Hey Jess!

I absolutely LOVE the Micro Spun! It's so soft... granted, they're not socks to be wearing under shoes (unless your shoes are way too big and it's really cold where you are) but they're great for lounging around. They really keep your feet warm too! I love Micro Spun! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/clap.gif" /><img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cheer.gif" /><img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/not.gif" /><img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/woohoo2.gif" />

Does that answer your question? lol

Just wanted to come back with a report on the elastic thread around the tops of the socks... I decided I'd give it a try after all and just snip it out if I hated it. I bought elastic sewing thread (it was about 89¢ a spool I think), and I ran it around the inside of the top of the cuff, put the sock on, tightened it up to where the sock felt snug and comfy, and knotted it. I really like how it turned out--the thread (and knot) are pretty invisible unless you turn the sock inside out and search for it, and it makes the cuffs snugger.

Hey Jess, which kind is a gusseted heel? Is that the kind where you do rows instead of rounds around the heel? I'm looking at a pair of socks in Crocheted Socks that I think I want to try, and it has that sort of heel. Looks to be less of a pain in the butt to put in. The book has to go back to the library (I've renewed it once already) but I think I can make something like them now that I've studied the pattern for a while. Maybe--I may end up checking it out again later instead :P

I'm still waiting on my yarn order from herrschner's. Any day now......I'm not a patient crocheter. Maybe the postman will bring my sock yarn tomorrow.....I hope so! It's hard to wait!

What a dangerous thing Crochetville is... lol

I just read your post and decided to look at Herrschners for sock yarn for my friend's socks... walked away with two skeins of yarn for them and 6 skeins of bernat sox in purple and aqua to make a sweater for baby. Heaven help me...

At least it was on sale, right? <img border=0 src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/ducky.gif" />

That's what I said too, Anne -- my husband just laughed and said if the worst thing I do is order sock yarn, he's got it made. lol.

After all...it was on sale, and I can't make socks without sock yarn. :)

BTW, I love the sock pics you posted. Those colors are so cute!

I checked the tracker # for my yarn -- the postman should be bringing it today!! :yay2 *fingers crossed*

Hugs!

Hi, my name is Anne and I'm addicted to yarn... and socks... and and and...

So, today I bought some Wool-Ease (Chestnut Heather and Blue Mist) to make some socks for my friend in Oregon. Since everything with the afghan I was doing went so badly, I decided to start the socks to sooth my soul a little... and boy is it working!

The only problem is that I've become addicted to Wool-Ease. And I am SERIOUSLY regretting living in FLORIDA! I'm all ready to find a job someplace cold, just so I can buy every color of Wool-Ease made and replace all my socks... *sigh*

I'm even crocheting at the computer, and that's a first!

Beth is going to be lucky if she ever sees these socks... I want them! LOL <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/angel.gif" />

Oh, and if the pic looks funny, it's because it's all sitting in my lap! <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/bounce012.gif" />

we're going on a trip this weekend, and I'll be spending more than 3 hours in the car tomorrow. So I thought I'd take a sock project with me.

What online sock pattern would you recommend for someone making their first pair of crocheted socks? I will be using sock yarn.

Hugs!

Juli
