Teaching youngsters

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all,

My little cousin (7) has been asking me for ages to teach her how to crochet. So, last year when she visited Cali, I sat her down with a hook and some yarn she liked. She's really smart and I know she understands how to create the stitches, but it seems to me that the hook is too cumbersome for her to hold (she has really tiny hands) to actually make any. :(

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and what did you do about it?

Oh, I hadn't heard of child-size hooks. I'll look for those; thanks, Joy. :)

I've thought about trying out bigger hooks to see how she can handle those. At the time, she was using an H and some left over Simply Soft (figured that would glide better for her than the Red Heart). Maybe it's the grip.. I'm just not quite sure.

I recently was trying to teach another adult to crochet. I started her with an aluminum hook. She wasn't getting very far. We were with a group of crocheters, and one of 'em pulled out some plastic (?) hooks, RH Crystalites, I think. Our newbie did better with the plastic, precisely because the yarn didn't slide around as much!
