crocheting onto tee shirts?

I would like to try adding a simple trim to tee shirts and maybe even progress to adding little skirts to kids tee shirts. Can anyone tell me how you begin? How do you get to the point where you can crochet into the fabric?

There are two ways you can do this. Make your trim and sew it on or I prefer to use a steel crochet hook, make a hole and just crochet into it for your base round. Then you know you have a perfect fit. That first round is long as you have to make your holes as you go or they will close back up, but it will give you a much better fit and you don't have t sew.
