Teaching my teenaged daughter to crochet

Recommended Posts

I've tried twice now to teach my almost 17 year old daughter how to crochet and she just didn't get it.

Is there anything you can suggest? She's at me again to try....

HELPPPPPP!!!

Maybe the 3rd time is a charm!!!

Try Annies Attic...there are stitch tutorials...some with Quick time videos. Maybe some of these visuals will help...

I tried this on my 23 year old daughter. she finds it easy as I taught her on the spot or actual practice.

I made a square swatch (yarn material) made of double chrochet stitch all through out. it's about 5" x 5". I showed her how to make my double crochet stitches. As I went along, with her still watching intently, I asked her to finish the remaining 10 rounds of stitches. that's how I introduced her to chain, double crochet stitch and how to make a turn.

She finished the project and it is now in our kitchen.we use it as a pot holder.

She was encouraged to learn more and made a bottled water holder herself. Her stitches are a little bit wobbly but at least she knows how to make some basic stitches now. with more practice and encouragement, she'll eventually make progress.

I was 17 and just about exasperated my "teacher". I told her how much I really wanted to learn, but I just wasn't getting it. She then chained a circle and proceeded to double crochet a granny square. Something clicked, and I got it. P.S. I tried to teach my daughter when she was about 8 and made her cry; meanwhile, my niece picked up chaining right quick from someone else, and I taught her to do single and double...she seems to have lost interest in that, however, I did teach her how to knit (only knit, not purl or cast on) and she made a scarf for herself and is proud to wear it. I did show her how to cast off with a crochet hook; the needles were too difficult. Anyhow, if all else fails, try a granny square; somehow, it was much easier for me to learn than rows and rows across.
