I rec'd a note from RJ's Dad with an update on his condition. RJ has developed a pulmonary embolism which is being treated with injections twice daily. On the bright side, his last CT scan shows great progress on peripheral tumor reduction. He has lost all his hair so the caps are truly appreciated.

Kaleb is doing okay but not as well as RJ and will be needing more aggressive treatments in his future. His Dad (military) dropped him off for another week at the hospital on the 1st.

AJ reports that the hats sent have been a big hit. I sent several, including one made in Patons Bohemian, a very soft yarn, which was a big hit. I sent enough so he could share with others and the child life specialist in charge of helping the children through this experience was so excited. She says they would love to have more hats. They have so many children who could use this special treat.

I promised to pass on the information (with her permission) and if anyone would like to make more hats, please send them directly to the address she provided. I am sure all sizes are needed.

Her name is Julie Hollowell.

To quote AJ:

"I have told Julie about you and the Crochetville Ladies. She was very excited about the possibilities of some "chemo caps" and notes of encouragement to the young cancer fighters. Julie is willing to do whatever she can to provide info and insure that all caps get to deserving recipients. Please tell anyone who wishes to brighten some little boy's or girl's lives to email Julie and include Crochetville or Friends of RJ and Kaleb in the subject line so she answers quickly. She does everything she can think of to turn scary situations to happy and enjoyable experiences for all the children. This young lady went into surgery with RJ the first night when he had to be awake for his bone marrow biopsy. Her sole reason for being there at the extremely late hour was to help RJ get through the very painful experience. Again, she is a very special lady...I cannot express what a joy and comfort she has been for RJ, and the rest of us as well."

That would be great! Thanks so much!

Ms. Holloway was very enthusiastic about receiving more hats. I love it when one can really know they are needed and wanted, and these certainly are both. Your help is appreciated in giving these kids' a bit of joy and letting them know others are thinking of them. You know how kids love surprises and they love presents. I am sure they'll go over big.

Skater "skully" caps and knit caps would be just perfect! Does he like the SF series _Firefly_? I've got yarn for making Jayne hats....

I can make a skully or two for him too!

I'm new here, so I don't know where to send anything too! (oHhh I know some microfiber yarn that would be cool!)

I rec'd a reply today. YES, RJ loves Firefly! He and his mother are both big fans. When mention of a Jayne cap, RJ said, "That would be cool!"

His dad says he will sport the bald look for at least 2 years.

His friend Kaleb is into Pirates of the Caribbean if anyone has the urge to look into that. I'm not sure what pirates wear. LOL

RJ also said to tell you all thank you very much for all you've done. He went on to say, "They don't even know me. It sure is nice of them to do all this."

Doesn't that just make you tear up?

His dad says he wishes we could see everyone's reactions when RJ drops off the extra hats. All the nurses and doctors get involved...it's an event!

So you all are doing a good thing. Thank you so much for blessing these kids!

Oh, and I forgot to say you can e-mail me for the address at crochet.sandie@gmail.com .

Thanks, thanks, thanks!! You all are wonderful.

  • 3 months later...

Just wanted to let everyone who helped with this project to know that RJ passed away on Saturday (9/29/07), surrounded by his family. His dad sent his thanks to everyone who offered up prayers and sent chemo caps and encouragement. He fought the hard fight. Now he is no longer suffering.
