good 12 square patterns for beginner?

After reading some of the posts here, I noticed that squares are in high demand here. I would like to try to stitch 12 inch squares, but have never done that before. I am still learning crochet, I know how to to sc, dc, hdc.

 

Any advice on where to start? is it better to start with a smaller square, any particular size hook or type of yarn???

is a very simple pattern. It has 13" squares but you could easily adjust it to make them 12" squares.
