Butterfly Shawl Crochet Along from knit.1 mag

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Well I went to Hobby Lobby to look for the supplies for this project and I could not the Lion Crochet cotton by Lion Brand??? I saw some Aunt Lydia's crochet thread in size 3 and size 10 which I didn't know if they would work. They are 100% mercerized cotton, will this work??? I would like to do the butterflys in color so I want to make sure I have all my options.. I told you I am really new at this and so I don't know what kind of thread to use.. thank you for the help.. Robin...

Robin, size 10 is the right size! Any brand will do. I don't know if any store actually carries the Lion Brand Cotton:lol at least no one has found it! Lots of color options with #10! On the website I saw the Lion Brand Cotton and it comes in two colors: white and cream...

I'm using two strands instead of four, some are using three strands... I guess some are actually following the pattern and using four!

I made a butterfly last night using one strand of Patons Grace (picture a couple posts above) and then the single strand of #10 for the mesh.

I just wanted to let you know that I will not be able to start this project right now even after buying the book saturday and some yarn. Sunday night my daughter was attached by a dog and she had to have plastic surgury on her face, she is only 7 and I am needing to watch her over the next week to make sure the stitches in her face stay clean and moist and to just be there for her.. We go back to the docter in a week to have the stitches removed but this will involve her being taken to OR and knocked out since she is a fighter and will not allow them to touch her any other way.. I plan on starting the project maybe in 2 weeks, just not sure at the moment.. I hope everyone is having great fun with there butterflys :manyheart .. Robin.

Robin, I really feel for you. Must have been terrifying for her - and you! Your attention definitely needs to be on your little one right now and following the doctor's orders to the letter.

I had a very bad facial cut when I was 5 that had to be sewn up by a plastic surgeon - he took 23 stitches inside and 19 outside (it was a through and through going from the bottom of my lip to my chin). I can still remember lying there with my eyes open while my face was being sewn up (I myself was velcro'd down! - guess that was protocol for the time). The scar was barely visible for about 20 years, but over the last 15 years it is becoming more noticeable again and it is still tender!

Make sure and get second and third and fourth opinions if you have to so she isn't saddled with more scaring than can be avoided. They can do amazing things these days!

I am so sorry to hear this awful news, Robin!:(

There is nothing so dreadful as to have a child in pain!

I am sending huge hugs to you both!

I hope she heals quickly and easily, with a minimum of trauma

and that you both recover quickly!

hugs and blessings

Noreen!:hug

:yarn I think it's important that you test your threads for color fastness!:yes

Make a swatch and wash it to see if it's going to bleed or fade. I have found that some cottons can be a problem!

I LOVE Paton's Grace, but have had problems with some of the colors in the past. I hope that they have fixed them.......... but I would be really sorry if people did all the work of making the shawl, only to have a color fastness/:no lack of fastness problem...........

Thanks for the heads-up Noreen. I have some Grace in Tangelo and assorted coordinating colors that has been begging to be made into something.. It's been sitting in a laundry basket beside my bed while I meditated on what. I was beginning to think that maybe this shawl was what it wanted to become.

I'm still trying to find the Baroque that is hiding somewhere in this house.. but today I couldn't look.. we went shopping for clothes to lay-away for the TAX-FREE weekend coming up. I think yarn should be included in the tax free holiday.. but I don't make the rules.. darn it.

THANK YOU, Noreen, for looking out for us! I didn't even think about checing the Patons Grace for colorfastness and it would be AWFUL to do put so much into it and have it get all wierd when I went to wash it!

I'm enjoying making yarns with different colors but am also plugging along on the off-white which is the one I fell in love with!

Those butterflies are so much fun to make! What a kick!:hook

You know how that little

'eek' goes off in your head.... LOL!:eek

There's been a thread running on one of the lists I am on, but I can't for the life of me remember which one:think...... talking about things people have attempted to make their 'runny' yarns more colorfast. I think that the consensus was that there are just some yarns that are more 'fugitive' than others.... sigh........

I used to use vinegar in the wash to help set colors in clothing. I suppose we could put a skein (or a test snippet) of Grace in the sink with some soap & vinegar and see what happens?

Thanks for the info, Noreen!

Ever since I moved in early July, I haven't seen my Patons Grace. I will probably just go with Opera (which I still have to order...I have been looking at my butterfly made of Royale, wondering what to do with it), but if/when I find that darn Patons Grace, I may try the vinegar experiment Lisa mentioned.

Where is Shelle?

My magazine is on its way. I did a BIN on ebay.

What do you all think about this thread for this shawl?

http://www.halcyonyarn.com/Yarn_pages/yarn083.html

I may go up to a laceweight for the whole thing anyway (doubled for the butterfly, single for the mesh). I don't really enjoy working with thread.

Gosh, those are some beautiful colors! I'm gonna mark that link and check it out more closely... Curious what the weight would be equivelent to...:think

Yum! gorgeous. I'd love to weave it..........

I wrote a blog entry about it explaining how:

Look what was on the site for that gorgeous thread: Wraps/in: 25

I remember reading about your wraps per inch thing, Noreen, I just went and checked and #10 cotton is 34 wraps per inch. What would you suggest, Oh Talented One? This is such lovely thread... I definitely want some of this - those colors are too lovely to pass up!!!!:manyheart

When all else fails..... Fudge it!:elle:elle:woo

Sorry, couldn't resist the pink lolliphants......

:lol

Okedokey........ 25 wpi means that it is somewhat heavier than #10 thread.

So, just use 3 strands for the butterfly and 1 strand for the mesh.

With colors like those, it's worth swatching!

Thank you for the tip. I really like the fact that this thread comes in cones (I can wind off balls as I need them) and the price just seems right. :yes

I think I am going to join in on this CAL. I bought the magazine with a coupon too :) because I wanted the butterfly pattern. I am trying some yarn stash I have that I was about to get rid of because I didn't think I had a use for it. I think I do now. If my first square doesn't turn out like I would like I will have to go back to the drawing board.

My plan B or if I make a 2nd one! I like the idea of using a blue thread or fine yarn for the mesh (or maybe a light or med green) and several different colors for the butterflies.

I wonder how much of this one needs to buy for the butterfly shawl? It's 2000 yards per pound, so say you triple it for each butterfly and use a single strand for the mesh...any educated guesses? Actually, I don't have the magazine with me and I don't remember how much material was required to begin with. :blush

The colors are so lovely, that I might forego Opera for this. Thanks for the link, Natasha.

HI there! :)

How much to buy?:think

I used 12 balls of Lion Brand #10 crochet cotton for the original shawl, which works out to just under 40 oz.

So, I would buy at least that much....

I would always prefer to have too much,:yes than just not enough!:no

Hope this helps.......

Hello Crocheters!

Just wondering how everyone's doing on their beautiful butterfly shawls... I've seen some beautiful postings and lovely color combinations!

As the 'host' for this Crochet Along I wanted to say a big THANK YOU TO NOREEN for all the help and support she's giving us, from what weight of yarn to how much to buy, and the all-important corrections for the small butterfly! How wonderful it is to have her along with us as she makes this very special shawl for her daughter's wedding! GO NOREEN!!!!!

Personally I've completed three butterflies in the color 'blah' (an off-white) three in the color 'bruise' (green shades, but no mesh on them yet) and one in a purple/blue/white with white mesh - they all look so lovely! I've also managed to amass an embarrassing amount of #10 thread in every color imaginable, which of course is not going to stop me from ordering from the beautiful thread linked in post #187 in this thread - that stuff is heavenly and those colors are like I've never seen!!!!!

I also purchased some hand-dyed yarn on eBay in the color Foggydew which is equal to a size #3 thread and it is BEGGING to be made into butterflies (of course I need to roll it into balls first...)

Happy Hooking, everyone, and I know we'd all love to see some pictures of the progress to date!!!!

Ah shucks, thank you so much, Paulette! It's a delight to be part of the crochet a long with all of you!

:c9

I have been working my chops off on new designs for new booklets, so fingers crossed on those.... the proposals go to the review committee soon, so I am hoping that they will like what I have been doing!

And, I am working to deadlines (very tight) on new projects for a magazine,

and have been working very hard on the Peace Dolls project, which you can see at

http://www.sacreddollsandbears.com

And, I have been getting questions about the flat dolls that I design and make, so I posted pics of a few of the one of a kind, freeform garments that I make with them. You can see those at

http://www.hankeringforyarn.com

One of the things that is great about spindle spinning yarn is that it is sooooooo portable, and wonderfully mindless. Which means that I can have the pleasure of spinning when Jim drives, and also when we are in situations (like visiting etc) where I couldn't concentrate on a pattern.

I go crazy if my hands aren't in motion, so spindle spinning is a blessing.

And, spinning silk is unbelievably addictive! It's pure magic.

:hookhugs all round

You're quite welcome. :)

Funky, as for the progress update, I'm still waiting for my magazine in the mail. *sigh* Will wait to order the thread till I have the pattern in hand.

Just wanted to link to this thread (see Nightowl's post) about Perle Cotton. She says this is loosely twisted and not very sturdy...? I posted a question in that thread, but there was no answer... Has anyone used this? The colors sure are gorgeous, though.

Oh, and yes, big thanks to Noreen from me as well for looking out for us and answering all the questions. We are so lucky and I'm very grateful for all the help.

Sheesh. Now I'm confused! Thank you for that link. Looks like we need a little more information before a decision can be made about the Halcyon thread.
